As readers, we all draw on our prior knowledge and experiences to make meaning of the texts we are reading. During its quarterly meeting on March 4, 2021, the National Assessment Governing Board convened a virtual symposium on how this varying background knowledge is addressed in reading comprehension assessments across the country and internationally.

This symposium featured Board members along with other experts in reading comprehension and large-scale assessment. The discussion provided context for a separate session during the same meeting that was devoted exclusively to a discussion on framework updates for the NAEP reading assessment.
